"Drake's Bitters" Drakes Plantation Bitters Advertisement.<p>Front page advertisement "for S.-T.-1860-X Drake's Plantation Bitters" taking up nearly 8 column inches in the fourth column of The August 21, 1863 issue of the "Republican Farmer" of Bridgeport, CT. The advertisement begins exactly as illustrated on page 195 of Fred Reed's "Civil War Encased Postage Stamps" but includes several testimonials that are not in Reed and/or which we've never seen or heard of before. Apart from it's importance to collectors of Encased Postage, this paper also includes a lengthy correspondence between the New York Governor, Horatio Seymour and President Abraham Lincoln concerning the disastrous riots that had recently erupted in New York. The overall condition of the paper is good, although there is some toning along the folds. The Drake advertisement and the Draft Riot correspondence are in good, displayable condition. Plus the NY Riot story makes this one great paper. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
