Dr. Melvin R. Gilmore Collection
(b. 1868 Nebraska-1940), noted ethnobotanist & author, study of Native Americans and Native plants. Becoming curator of the Nebraska State Historical Society in 1911. Gilmore's work included compiling information including photos about Native American village sites, recorded tradition and grew plants known to be used by Native Americans working closely with the Arika, Pawnee and Omaha tribes. In 1919 Gilmore published "Uses of Plants by the Indians of the Missouri River Region". Gilmore went on to become curator at the North Dakota State Historical Society, served on the staff of the Museum of the American Indian in New York, curator of ethnology at the University of Michigan.
