Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (MGM, 1941). Lobby Card Set of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (MGM, 1941).
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (MGM, 1941). Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14"). Victor Fleming directed this Robert Louis Stevenson tale that Hollywood had twice before adapted into features. Spencer Tracy stars as the titular hero/villain, and on one visit to the set, novelist W. Somerset Maugham watched his performance and deadpanned, "Which one is he now, Jekyll or Hyde?" Stevenson does not include love interests for either Jekyll or Hyde in his novella, but Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner can thank the 19th century stage version for the invention of their characters, barmaid Ivy Peterson and aristocratic Beatrix Emery, respectively. Tracy originally pushed for Katharine Hepburn -- before they had met and begun their famous affair -- to play both parts with the idea that the love triangle would further the theme of the polarities inherent within human nature. This lobby card set has a censorship warning in the bottom border of each card. The cards also have several pinholes and small stains. Tape marks are present on two cards, a tear on the edge of one card and ink marks on the left side of a card. Very Good/Fine.
