<td width="100%">
I have dated this dovetailed six board chest from 1870 plus because manufactured wire nails were used in its construction. It came from New England and I believe it was made by an individual craftsman, who was capably skilled. His dovetails are pretty even and he even did a lap joint on the feet. Beveled braces were used under the lid to guard against warping. A lift-top box is just under the lid inside. It has a lock mechanism, but we don't have the key. The floor has a split that runs from side to side. It appears to have been used inside the house, because the inside walls are not terribly scarred as they would have been had it been used for tools. I'm not sure what wood was used--just that it is a hard wood, but the beauty of this piece is in its Shaker-like simplicity. When we got it, it had a terrible refinish attempt on it, but we restored it to its original color, which we determined by the color that was on the back. This piece is shippable by UPS in the oversize 3 catagory to the tune of about $100. Greyhound may be another option as is local pick up.
