Similar to Royal Doulton Siliconeware, this lovely jardiniere is early Doulton Lambeth stoneware.

A stoneware planter from Doulton, Lambeth Pottery (made before they became Royal Doulton in 1902) - it bears the mark for Doulton, Lambeth, for the period 1880-1890, plus other impressed marks. There is ?1881? under the mark (which probably is the year the pot was made), and various batch and
day marks ?h.h.? or it could be ?h.b.?, and also ?I.I? and ?WW? and the handwritten incised mark ?WW? (or maybe it is ?MM?, and hence the mark of Mary Mitchell, although it is not joined together).
There is also another mark which appears like two commas side by side, and a Staffordshire Knot mark with the letters AMS - this mark is described in Godden as appearing on a Wedgwood dinner service of the same period, and was thought to be the
retailer?s mark.
The jardiniere itself has a stoneware body with applied swags and garlands in a dark green. Underneath these is a freize of dancing
children in Wedgwood blue. Around the base is a series of rosettes in brown.
There are three areas of loss to the green swags (this type of loss is common in applied decoration on stoneware), and a small mark on the rim . Inside has a tiny amount of use staining, but
as the pot is unglazed on the inside bottom, it can be scoured and this would come off. Pot measures 17cm high (6.3/4 inches) and 16.5cm diameter (6.1/2 inches). A charming item of
Victoriana.
