One page signed "Douglas MacArthur" as Retired General, 10 1/2" x 8"; August 20, 1951.

A letter addressed to Mr. Paul C. Smith, Chief Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle.

MacArthur writes, in part:

"I... support most heartily your purpose in pressing for action by the Congress on the remaining recommendations of the Hoover Commission. I feel, however, that because of my open opposition to the policies of the administration my affiliation as a member of the Veterans Committee might unnecessarily draw fire upon your proposals... in my private contacts I shall do all that I can to support you."

At the time, MacArthur had recently returned from Korea and was staying at 90 Church St., New York.
