Marvelous original color painting of Douglas Fairbanks by portrait painter Carmelo Caruana, originating from the estate of silent actress Mary Pickford and possibly used on a magazine cover, accomplished in gouache on a 9.75 x 13.25 sheet of artist paper and depicting Fairbanks smoking in profile as the title character from the 1927 silent film The Gaucho. Signed in the lower right by the artist, who adds to the lower left: "Douglas Fairbanks as 'The Gaucho.'" The portrait is affixed to a 16.25 x 21.25 presentation mount. In very good to fine condition, with damage to the mount, not affecting the portrait. Released at the peak of Fairbanks' box office clout, The Gaucho is considered one of the actor's very best films, a lavish adventure that features a darker, more sexualized tone than that of his earlier, lighter efforts. The consignor notes that he received this as a gift directly from Buddy Rogers, the third husband of Mary Pickford, shortly after Pickford's 1979 death, and prior to the famous 1981 'Pickfair' sale. Pickford had been married to Fairbanks from 1920 to 1936.
