ALS, one page both sides, 7.25 x 11, July 31. To his friend, Roland, signed, “Doug.” In part: “I’m touched! I’m touched by being the recipient of the only two letters you’ve written in X years…I’m distressed to hear of your dentist troubles—arthritis (or whatever) trouble and of your possible return to N.Y. I am more distressed than I can say to learn of your enforced temperance. Taken all in all—with you having gone so completely to need my genital organs withered by inactivity and the forced consumption of saltpeter—I fail to see what there is for me to come back for. I can—and sometimes feel I’d like to—end it all up here, where God forsook the world and left it to its own devices. My conscience is as clear as can be expected–I’ve no outstanding debts except to the Government and Dr. Corbett ($25)—so why not?…So cheers, my lad, I’m keeping a stuff upper lip—if nothing else. And I pray that my martyrdom up here will be rewarded by finding you still ensconced in the Tinsel City on my return.” In very good condition, with surface creasing and wrinkling, heavier along the edges, and toning.
