Double-barrel American percussion shotgun, engraved, gold-inlaid and personalized by Master Colt engraver Cunio Helfricht for his own use, circa approx 1865-1870’s. The gun is gold-inlaid in neat block letters on center rib of barrel, C. Helfricht, Hartford, CT. The gun is finely scroll engraved with a gold-inlaid vignette of fox on left, rabbit on right, and the arm shows thick gold bands at breech and is engraved on mounts to match with gold-inlaid hunting dog on trigger guard. The gun is in 12ga, with side by side mounted barrels of 28-1/4”, 45” overall, medium weight with nicely checkered select walnut stock. The gun remains in very good plus to near fine condition showing 50-70% original light brown finish on barrels and most of its fancy Damascus pattern. The triggerguard shows traces of bright blue, the locks and tang show traces of case hardening. The buttplate is engraved to match and shows some light original blue finish. The stocks are very good plus. The barrels are not proofed and the gun is American made and there are no maker’s marks or proofs on the underside of the barrels. An original to the period ramrod is retained. The actions are crisp and the arm has seen little use showing just some storage and handling with just some slight marks to the wood. This gun was found on the East coast approx. 30 years ago in the possession of a descendent of Helfricht. At one time there was an extensive series of documentation and the gun was well known to noted author Larry Wilson. Unfortunately the provenance and documentation have been lost, but the gun is well known in Colt collecting circles. Est: $3,000 - $6,000
