Double Indemnity (Paramount, 1944). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Fred MacMurray plays insurance salesman Walter Neff, named "Walter Ness" in the original screenplay. Director Billy Wilder discovered an actual Walter Ness living in Beverly Hills and selling insurance, so he changed the name to protect the innocent and avoid a lawsuit. Since MacMurray's Walter ends up tie-deep in insurance fraud and murder, Ness was probably grateful for the courtesy. Unfortunately, though, somewhere a Walter Neff has had to repeat for strangers for his whole life the immortal line, "How could I have known that murder could sometimes smell like honeysuckle?" This lobby card shows MacMurray "thinking about that anklet" on Barbara Stanwyck, but she's thinking only of murder. The card has a tear on the right side, a few small stains in the borders and a few abrasions on the image, but nothing distracts from the key -- and arguably most memorable -- scene in the movie. Fine.
