Double Eagles 1857-S Spiked Shield Reverse. PCGS graded Mint State 66. SSCA 0740. Contained in its original AMERICA'S GREATEST TREASURE SHIP box of issue. This examples boasts the most beautiful mint luster imaginable. Rich and vibrant, the surfaces emit a shimmering cartwheel effect when reflected in the light. As the "66" grade assignment implies, this stunning Liberty Head double eagle is virtually flawless, displaying an absolute minimum of shallow minute contact marks. The strike is razor-sharp, comparable in overall detail to that of a Proof. Absolutely stunning in every way.<BR><BR>PCGS has attributed seven different varieties of the 1857-S double eagle. The offered example, labeled the "Spiked Shield," is characterized by a thin die line extending upward diagonally inside the lower part of the first stripe, protruding through the left side of the shield directly below the eagle's wing. A second spike extends outward from the shield's edge, just below and nearly parallel to the first spike.
