Double Comics #1941 (Elliot, 1941) CGC VF 8.0 Off
Double Comics #1941 (Elliot, 1941) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages. Open up this issue to find All-Winners Comics #1, a key Timely! What the heck's it doing in there, you ask? Well, no two copies of Double Comics are the same -- not only did the issues for each year have several different covers, you never knew which remaindered comics would be re-bound on the inside, or even which publisher they'd be from! Any kids who bought this mag hoping to read all about the cover hero called the Green Light instead found the aforementioned All-Winners, plus Quality's National Comics #14. A word on the All-Winners: it's got a Captain America story by Simon and Kirby, plus Human Torch and Sub-Mariner features and a text feature with the first appearance of the All-Winners Squad. Of course, the National issue is a less acclaimed book, but it does have art by the great Lou Fine. And of course, we should mention that this is a square bound 128-pager, making a VF copy quite a pleasant surprise. Note that a small plastic stabilizing peg is loose inside the CGC holder, not affecting the integrity of the holder or the comic itself. Overstreet lists a 2005 VF 8.0 value of $988 for this Double Comics issue but notes, "Any containing rare origin or first issues are worth much more... value would be approximately 50 percent of contents." The two comics mentioned above would therefore give this copy an approximate Overstreet value of $7,500. CGC census 7/05: 2 in 8.0, 1 higher.
