Acclaimed writer who played an integral role in the Harlem Renaissance (1907–1998). West is best known for her novels, The Living is Easy and The Wedding. Two items: scarce TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, no date. West writes to Dr. William Plumley, in full: “I would like to apologize for my delay in responding to your letters. I did phone you in June to let you know of my regret that I am unable to attend ‘Blues in America.’ Due to my writing schedule and age I no longer travel or lecture. I am deeply honored of your interest in my work. I have enclosed two photographs of myself which I hope will be of interest in your project”; and a 4.25 x 6 postcard photo, signed on the reverse in blue ballpoint, “Best wishes! Dorothy West.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
