Dorothy Kay neé Elvery (1886-1964) WOMAN AND CHILDREN IN A LANDSCAPE
signed lower left
oil on canvas
58 by 61cm., 23 by 24in.

Dorothy Elvery was the elder sister of Beatrice Elvery, later Lady Glenavy, and a well-known artist in her own right. She studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, and later under Walter Osborne at the RHA painting school, where she was known as one of “the clever Misses Elverys”. She won the coveted Taylor Scholarship in 1904 and was exhibiting with the RHA by 1906. In 1910 she married an eminent South African surgeon and emigrated to that country, from where she continued to send paintings to the RHA and various other Dublin and London exhibitions. She developed a successful portraiture practice and was an official war artist during World War II. For further details see Snoddy, pages 298-300.

The present example is a rare early work, painted prior to 1910, and in subject and treatment very similar to the three student works which she took with her when she left Ireland and which are illustrated in her biography, Everything You Do is a Portrait of Yourself.
