Dorothea Dix Manuscript Archive,<p>32 ALsS, 1 postcard, 3 other items, pieces of plants and flowers. 1878-1886. A series of deeply affectionate letters from Dorothea L. Dix, superintendent of Nurses in the Union Army during the Civil War, to a young Katie Britton, the darling daughter of a New Jersey physician. Many of the letters are essentially thank you notes for gifts of flowers and plants, but they reveal a loving, affectionate, sentimental side, as in this brief message to Kate's mother: "Pelting rain – driving clouds, speeding winds, but sunshine & sky, blue over & above all. Grace and peace within. Don't let the dear daughter tire herself with coming up this morning. My love to her now as always." Nine of the letters, most brief, are signed D.L. Dix, the remainder signed in initials or written in the third person, all offering a glimpse of the loveliest side of the great Civil War caretaker.FALSE
