Doris Ulmann Signed Platinum Appalachian Print
Doris Ulmann Signed Platinum Print. A 3/4 length portrait of a woman standing by a field of daisies. She is wearing a hat, a necklace, and a pinafore over her dress. This was likely taken in the Appalachian Mountains, an area Ulmann loved to photograph because she felt that their culture was in danger of dying out. Ulmann was a tireless worker, carrying a bulky wooden view camera on a tripod, taking full plate negatives from which she made her platinum prints. This type of portrait was very important to her: "A face that has the marks of having lived intensely, that expresses some phase of life, some dominant quality or intellectual power, constitutes for me an interesting face. For this reason the face of an older person, perhaps not beautiful in the strictest sense, is usually more appealing than the face of a younger person who has scarcely been touched by life." The woman portrayed in this photograph certainly appears to have been "touched by life." The 6" x 8" print is in excellent condition with the signature in pencil beneath the photo on the 11" x 14" mount.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
