Doris Day Love Me Or Leave Me Blouse
Doris Day's Hero Screen Worn Blouse from "Love Me Or Leave Me" In 1955 Doris Day and James Cagney starred in what is still considered one of the most emotionally charged and beautifully staged bio-pics of all time, MGM's unusually realistic and dark "Love Me or Leave Me", the true story of jazz singer Ruth Etting, and her tragic marriage with psychopathic gangster Marty "The Gimp" Snyder. For Doris Day especially this was (and still is), a once-in-a-lifetime role, a complete opposite of her carefully crafted image. Ruth Etting was a "kept woman" who pushed her way out of the sewers of Chicago back-alley nightclubs to become a Ziegfeld Follies girl, and then a star. Her character was "loose". She smoked and drank, and wore very sexy costumes, and allowed her character to endure enormous physical and emotional abuse at the hands of Cagney's Snyder. And she pulled it off magnificently. In fact Cagney was so overwhelmed by her performance that he insisted that she get top billing, the only time in his career that he allowed that. Costume Designer Helen Rose created the famous outfits for Day, both her performance outfits, and her "off the stage" pieces. Each had to be special, and director Charles Vidor insisted that they convey in each scene her emotional roller-coaster. This is the iconic hero screen worn red polka-dot billow-sleeved, ruffled blouse that Doris Day wears in the pivotal scene where she is rehearsing for her big Ziegfeld Follies debut, and almost loses it all when her "lover", Cagney disrupts the rehearsal. Everyone remembers the blouse for its delicate, in a scene where Day is desperately trying to keep the world from crashing down around her. It is still in excellent condition, and has both Doris Day's name and the wardrobe inventory production number inked in the inside band. The blouse was given to an employee of the studio shortly after shooting. It include a Letter of Provenience from the family member who has kept it in their private collection all these years. This item also comes with a Movie Props DNA: This item now includes three levels of security: 1) DNA laced invisible ink – a 9-digit code laced with DNA ink is placed on an appropriate place of the prop/costume and can be only viewed using a high-frequency UV light. The chances of replicating the specific DNA sequence which is unique to MPDNA is 1 in 33 trillion. 2) Archival Microchip Encrypted Tag - a patented, acid-free, 1"x 3" tag with an encrypted microchip is placed onto the Certificate of Authenticity. The microchip contained within the tag contains all of the pertinent information about the prop or costume. The tag is tamper proof and the microchip is encrypted, making it impossible to duplicate.? 3) The certificate also has the 9-digit DNA invisible ink mark which must match the 9-digit invisible ink mark on the prop. This will ensure that it is a genuine prop issued by Premiere Props and authenticated by MPDNA.
