“Don’t give up the ship!” The immortal last words uttered by Captain Lawrence off Boston Harbor, June 1st 1830 in a famous naval battle between the American Frigate Chesapeake and the British Frigate Shannon, commanded by Captain P.B. Broke. This sword is the exact sword worn by Captain Broke while commanding the Shannon when he captured the American Frigate Chesapeake. The sword is pictured in the January 1927 Bannerman catalog at item number 3026. Also a notarized affidavit on Bannerman’s stationary states “This sword was bought by us about 1908 from our agent Mr. M. Levin, Leadenhall St. London, England. Letters from him accompanying [sic] the sword stated that it was the sword of Captain Broke when he commanded the frigate “SHANNON”. We remember the arrival of the sword here and the correspondence concerning it. We vouch for the printed catalog description.” Signed Francis Bannerman Sons, Francis Bannerman.
