"The Vanguard" oil on canvas. Frame measures 23" x 33". Provenance includes notarized letter from Don Troiani: " The Painting Depicts a group of U.S. cavalry skirmishers of the late 1860's in pursuit of hostiles. They are dressed in typical cold weather uniforms of this period. Mittens would not have been worn in combatas it would be nearly impossible to handle their firearms. All of the troopers are equipped with Sharps m.1863 carbines and m.1860 Colt's revolvers. The caps are standard m.1859. forage caps, a few McDowell pattern caps (visors with a downward cast) and a slouch hat. The overcoats are the standard sky blue kersey prescribed in the regulations and based on an original in my collection dated 1864. The horse equipments are the m.1859 McCellan pattern and have the additions of blankets, rubber ponchos, canteens, and haversacks etc. strapped to them. The uniforms and equipments in this painting are based on mostly original specimens in my collection and some in the West Point Museum.
