American military officer (1818–1898) who served in the Seminole, Mexican-American, and Civil Wars. His actions in the last were the source of much controversy, and he was ultimately relieved of command for his failure to pursue Bragg’s withdrawal following the Battle of Perryville in 1862. Original hand-tinted 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite full-length portrait of Buell in uniform. Published by J. H. Bigelow of New York, bearing an 1861 C. D. Fredricks copyright notice to the lower border. In fine condition.
