American military officer (1818–1898) who served in the Seminole, Mexican-American, and Civil Wars. His actions in the last were the source of much controversy, and he was ultimately relieved of command for his failure to pursue Bragg’s withdrawal following the Battle of Perryville in 1862. ALS signed “D. C. Buell,” one page, 5 x 7.75, Airdire, February 4, 1892. Letter to Edward David of Washington, D.C. In part: “The battle of Contreras commenced on the 19th and ended on the 20th of August, 1847: The battle of Churubusco was fought on the 20th of August. General Longstreet was in the second battle but not in the first. He and I belonged to different brigades and divisions.” In fine condition, with overall toning with a lighter block over the signature area, mounting remnants to borders, and lightly trimmed edges.
