Winchester Model 1886 Take-Down Express Rifle with Cody Firearms Museum factory letter that states the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on March 25, 1909. The letter describes the rifle as caliber "50 Express" with round nickel-steel barrel, plain trigger, "plain wood, pistol grip stock", "4-cartridge magazine", "Take down", "Screw eyes" and "Winchester High Velocity". The rifle has a blue, 26-inch, round barrel, forearm cap, half-magazine and frame. The hammer, loading lever and crescent steel buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The forearm and pistol grip stock are straight grain walnut with a varnish finish. The pistol grip has a black, hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The stock and forearm cap are fitted with loops for detachable sling swivels. The barrel has a dove-tail mounted "Winchester Express" front sight with silver bead and a "Winchester Express" rear sight with three folding leaves. Each sight leaf has a platinum sighting line. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO../NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. JAN. 20. 1885." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The oval Winchester "W/P" proofmark and the caliber designation "50-EX." are roll stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The oval Winchester proofmark is stamped on the top of the receiver. "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" is roll-stamped in three lines on the upper tang. The lower tang is stamped with the 184 and 1885 patent dates in two lines behind the trigger and the serial number "145020" in block letters behind the rear tang screw.

Condition: Excellent. The rifle retains 80% of the original blue finish. The barrel has some minor wear on the muzzle and left side but retains most of the blue finish. The rear sight leaves have some light pitting. The forearm cap, take-down collar and contact points of the frame have moderate finish wear with a smooth, silver-gray patina. The case colors on the hammer, lever and buttplate have faded to a mottled silver gray. The stock and forearm retain about 80% of the original varnish and are both in very fine overall condition with scattered, minor, handling and storage marks. This is an excellent example of a very rare, special order Winchester Model 1886 Express Rifle with take-down, 26-inch, 4 cartridge magazine, barrel, half-magazine, pistol grip stock and factory sling swivel mounts.
