This is a unique example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever-Action rifle with an extremely rare special order stainless steel barrel. Winchester introduced stainless steel barrels in 1926. The barrel had a special black japaan enamel finish which gave them a distinctive appearance. Winchester discontinued stainless steel barrels in 1930. Sales of rifles with stainless steel barrels was limited. Rifles with stainless steel barrel like this example are rare. The rifle has a caliber .33 WCF barrel with black japaan finish. The half-magazine, forearm cap, and receiver have the standard Winchester commercial blue finish. The loading lever and hammer are color casehardened. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm are varnished and the stock is fitted with a black hard rubber checkered buttplate with the Winchester logo embossed in the center. The barrel has a Lyman "Hunting" front sight with ivory bead and a sporting style rear sight. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-STAINLESS STEEL-" in bold letters below the rear sight followed by the caliber designation, "33 W.C.F." The legend "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. /NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. Jan. 20.1885." is roll stamped in two lines on the left side of the barrel ahead of the rear sight. Oval Winchester "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEL 86/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG.IN U.S. PAT. OFF." in three lines. The serial number, "157730" is stamped on the lower tang.
