Winchester Deluxe Model 1876 Fancy Sporting Rifle with Winchester Gun Museum letter. The letter states that rifle serial number 110244 was shipped from the Winchester factory on September 10, 1896 and was equipped with a caliber .45-70 octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman rear and leaf sights and Lyman front sight. The rifle has a blued octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent steel buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The bolt and loading gate are blue. The stock and forearm are highly figured "fancy grain" walnut with "Style H" checkered panels and a high polish varnish finish. The black hard rubber pistol grip cap has the relief marking: "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The barrel is fitted with a dovetail mounted Lyman "Jack Sight" with colored bead and a Lyman folding, single leaf rear sight with a bright triangle. A Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "45 - 70" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just in front of the receiver. The lower receiver tang is roll-stamped:" -PAT.OCT.14.1884/JAN. 20.1885." in two lines behind the trigger. The serial number "110244" is stamped behind the rear tang screw. The model designation on the upper receiver tang is covered by the combination sight.
BBL: 26 inch octagon
Stock: walnut checkered pistol grip
Gauge: 45/70
Finish: casehardened/blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 110244
Condition: Very good. The barrel and magazine retain nearly 30% of the original blue finish. There is some minor finish wear on the edges of the barrel and a 3/4-inch long line of shallow pitting along the left side of the barrel just in front of the forearm cap. The colored bead is missing from the front sight. The casehardened finish on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate has aged to a mottled brown patina. Strong traces of the original case colors are visible in protected areas. The bolt retains most of the original blue finish. About 50% of the blue finish is present on the loading gate. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are in very fine to excellent condition with scattered and very minor handling marks. The checkering is sharp and most of the original high polish varnish finish remains intact. This is a very good looking example of an original, fully documented Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with special order sights.
