Documented Winchester Model 1886 50-100-450 Express Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 chambered in the rare 50-100-450 caliber manufactured in 1898. The top of the barrel is marked "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. -" ahead of the rear sight and "50-100-450" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-" and the lower tang is marked with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates directly behind the trigger and the serial number behind the lever. The barrel is fitted with a dovetailed blade front sight and a three leaf (two folding, one fixed) rear sight. These Express rifles were fitted with the Winchester Express rear sight normally. The barrel and magazine tube were blue, the bolt bright blue and the remaining parts casehardened. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with a checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, "50/100/450" caliber, round barrel, plain trigger, "consigned", and that it was received in and shipped out of the warehouse to order number 3549 on February 10, 1898. The powerful 50-100-450 Express cartridge was introduced by Winchester for the Model 1886 rifle in 1895 but was not popular with American hunters and was discontinued in 1910. Model 1886 Express Rifles chambered for the 50-100-450 cartridge are extremely rare.

Model: 1886
BBL: 26 inch round
Stock: walnut
Guage: 50-100-450

Good as partially refinished (wood, barrel near chamber). The magazine tube retains traces original blue finish mainly in protected areas, and the remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown and gray patina. The wood has been refinished and remains good with a number of light scratches on the left rear of the stock, and overall a few minor dings and handling marks. There are a couple moderate chips on the edge of the buttplate. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
