Documented U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1903 National Match Rifle With Research Letter

Springfield Armory Model 1903 National Match rifle with letter from the Springfield Research Service (SRS). The SRS letter states the sales record for this rifle identifies it as "Rifle, U,S. Cal. .30, M1903, National Match" (NM) sold at Camp Perry, Ohio, to R.N. Flint of Detroit, Michigan on May 15, 1929. The rifle has a "Style S" stock with grasping grooves and post WWI, 'low hump' hand guard. The rifle has the standard NM features which include: (1) reversed safety, (2) headless cocking piece, (3) serial numbered, polished bolt, (4) polished receiver rails and floor plate and (5) star-gauged barrel. The receiver is drilled and tapped for a Lyman 48 micrometer sight. The barrel muzzle is stamped with the Springfield Armory star gauge mark. The barrel is roll-stamped "SA/Ordnance Shell & Flame/7-23" in three lines behind the rear sight. The receiver has the standard marking "U.S/SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903." above the serial number "1258041". The bolt has armory polishing marks above the safety lug and is stamped "W L/3" on the top of the handle. The serial number "1258041" is electro-penciled on the top of the bolt body. The markings on the safety and magazine cut-off utilize block letters. All components have the Springfield Armory black-green parkerized finish except for the polished bolt body, "ON" side of the magazine cut-off and face of the rear sight. The lower barrel band and sling swivel are blued. The rear sight base has the semi-gloss black finish found on post WWI M1903 rifles. The stock and handguard have been lightly varnished. The left side of the stock is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection mark which consists of the block initials "D.A.L." in a rectangle. The encircled, block, "P" firing proof is stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. The stock is correctly not stamped with the rifle serial number. The rifle is complete with a P.J. O'Hare front sight cover and rear sight protector.

Very fine. The rifle retains 97% plus of the original finish. The receiver has two filler screws on the right rear side with some scuffing of the finish visible above. The only significant wear is on the front sight collar from contact with the sight cover. The barrel crown has the bright finish surrounding the bore which is indicative of minimal use. The bolt retains nearly all of the armory polish. The stock has been varnished but is in fine condition with sharp Ordnance inspection and proof marks and minimal handling wear. This is a very fine documented Springfield M1903 NM rifle. This is one of the last M1903 NM rifles sold prior to introduction of the M1903A1 NM rifles later in 1929.
