This is an example of a Colt Single Action Cavalry Model Revolver that was inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector David F. Clark (DFC). This revolver has a grip that is stamped with the final inspection mark of Ordnance inspector Capt. John G. Butler (JGB) and dated "1884". The butt is fitted with a lanyard swivel that is similar to the swivels fitted to Colt Cavalry Model revolvers by the New York Militia. These two features indicate that this revolver is one of the 800 Cavalry Model revolvers with 7 1/2 inch barrels that were refurbished by Colt in 1895 for issue to the New York Militia. The revolver has a military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, loading gate and hammer have a color casehardened finish. The one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The revolver has the oval ejector rod head introduced at approximately serial number 113,000 and cavalry style hammer with elongated bordered knurling on the spur and a cone-shaped firing pin. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Elongated Block Letter address "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". Small "D.F.C." sub-inspection stamps are located on the underside of the barrel, the bottom of the frame, side of the cylinder and the left grip heel. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. The left side of the frame is stamped with the Colt three-dates/three-line patent marking followed by the "U.S." property mark. The assembly number "603" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. Colt "O", "G" and "J" inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the barrel behind the ejector housing stud. A Colt "S" inspection mark and "1" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder between the chambers. "G" is stamped below the serial number on the trigger guard and back strap and "S" is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The full serial number, "114002" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "4002" is stamped on the underside of the barrel and the side of the cylinder. The grip serial number is illegible. All of the visible serial numbers match. The lower right side of the grip is stamped with the Ordnance sub-inspection mark consisting of the script initials "D.F.C." is a rectangle.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 114002
Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 80% of the 1895 Colt refurbished blue and casehardened finish. There is finish wear along the left side of the barrel and on the side of the ejector housing but the barrel has visible Colt feathered polishing marks on either side of the front sight blade and above the ejector housing stud. The factory legend is clear and the "D.F.C." sub-inspection mark, "P" proof and partial serial number on the underside of the barrel are sharp. The cylinder retains 80% of the blue finish with sharp markings. The trigger guard and back strap have moderate finish wear and retain about 50% of the blue. The frame, loading gate and hammer retain close to 90% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The frame markings are sharp. The replaced grip is fine with moderate handling wear and clear date and final inspection marks. There are a number of small holes in the grip heels. The action is crisp and functions well. This is a good-looking example of a "D.F.C." inspected, New York Militia, Colt Single Action Cavalry revolver.
