Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle manufactured in 1910. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum factory letter that states it was shipped from the factory warehouse on April 26, 1910. The letter describes the rifle as: "Rifle, 40/65" with "round barrel and "plain trigger". The special order features listed in the letter are: "Fancy pistol grip, Oil finish, Lyman small bead front sight, Joint rear sight, Marbles Flex, 1/2 magazine, Nickel steel, Smokeless, "Target and send same", Takedown". The rifle has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine and receiver. The forearm cap, loading lever, hammer and crescent buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy walnut with no checkering. The pistol grip is fitted with a black hard rubber "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" cap. The barrel is fitted with a special order Lyman front sight with silver bead and a factory blank in the rear sight dovetail. A Marbles, "Flexible Rear Sight" is mounted on the receiver tang. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.PAT.OCT.14.1884. JAN.20.1885." in two lines ahead of the rear sight dove-tail. "NICKEL STEEL" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel behind the rear sight dovetail followed by the caliber designation "40-65 W.C.F.". The oval Winchester "WP" proofmark is stamped on the top of the receiver. The left side of the receiver is neatly non-factory inscribed with the name: "H.J. LANGDON" in a single line. The lower receiver tang is roll stamped with the two line 1884/1885 patent dates and the serial number "143288".
BBL: 26 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 40-65 WCF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 143288
Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 80% of the slightly faded original blue finish on the barrel and magazine, and 60% on the receiver. The finish is thin on the edges and bottom of the receiver. The bolt has nearly all of the original blue finish. The case colors on the forearm cap, hammer, loading lever and buttplate have faded to a silver patina. The fancy walnut stock and forearm are both in very fine condition with scattered, minor handling marks. This is a very good example of a Winchester Model 1886 Takedown Rifle with fancy walnut stock and forearm and many documented factory special order features.
