Documented "Soft" Shipped New York Engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Pearl Grips and Factory Letter

Engraved, nickel plated, Colt Single Action Army revolver with pearl grips that was manufactured in 1884. This revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter that lists the features as Caliber:.45/C, Barrel Length: 7 1/2" and Finish: Soft. The type of stocks are not listed. The letter states that this revolver was part of a 15 gun shipment to Schoverling, Daly & Gales in New York on July 28, 1884. The next revolver in this auction, Single Action serial no. 111054, is also New York engraved was shipped "soft" to Schoverling, Daly and Gales in the same July 28, 1884, shipment and has the identical nickel plated finish and New York engraving. The "New York School" scroll and punch-dot engraving on this revolver and Single Action no. 111054 is very similar to the engraving on the Colt Single Action illustrated on page 372 of "THE COLT ENGRAVING BOOK, VOLUME ONE" by R.L. Wilson which was shipped "soft" to Hartley & Graham in October 1883 and is believed to have been engraved by L.D. Nimschke or his shop. The coverage approximates Colt "B" or "2" engraving. The revolver has bordered knurling on the hammer spur and the later oval ejector rod head. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the legend "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.-" in one line. The left side of the frame is roll stamped with the Colt "Three-Date/Three-Line" patent markings. "45 CAL" is stamped on the left front trigger guard bow. The assembly number "8918" is stamped in the loading gate. The serial number, "111057" is located on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match. "L", "1" and three punch-dots are stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. The revolver is fitted with two-piece, pearl grips.

Fine. The revolver retains 40% of the retailer applied nickel-plated finish. The balance has a silver-gray patina with scattered, minor, patches of age discoloration. The "New York" scroll engraving remains sharp. The barrel, frame and trigger guard markings are clear and the serial numbers are crisp. The grips are slightly yellowed from age and show moderate handling wear. There are several very minor chips along the inside of the grip and one small crack on the side of the right grip. The action is crisp but the hammer will not hold at half-cock. This is a good example of a documented, New York engraved, Colt Single Action Army revolver. It is extremely rare to find to Colt Single Action revolvers with identical engraving style and factory letters that show that they were part of the same shipment to the same dealer.
