Documented "Soft" Finish Shipped, Engraved, Blackpowder Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Pearl Grips and Factory Letter

Colt Single Action Army revolver with Colt factory letter that states the revolver was shipped from Colt to Schoverling, Daly and Gales in New York, New York on July 28, 1884. The letter lists the finish as "Soft" which indicates that the revolver was intended for engraving outside Colt. The revolver is decorated with bold Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The coverage approximates Colt "B" factory engraving. The style and quality of the engraving indicate that it is probably the work of Louis Daniel Nimschke or his shop. L.D. Nimschke was one of the foremost 19th Century American firearms engravers and one primary non-factory engravers of Colt Single Action revolvers. The revolver has a nickel-plated finish with niter blue screws and two-piece pearl grips. The ejector rod has the second style oval head and the hammer has a knurled, bordered, spur. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co./HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A." in two lines. "45 CAL." is roll-stamped on the left front trigger guard bow. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three-date/three-line patent marking. The assembly number "8610" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The serial number "111037" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Fine. The revolver has been professionally restored. Nearly all of the nickel-plated finish is intact. The screws have nearly all of the fire blue finish. The flawlessly executed scroll engraving is extremely crisp. The replacement pearl grips are in very fine condition with several small, difficult to detect repairs. The action is crisp but the hammer will not hold at half-cock. This is an outstanding-looking example of an engraved, Blackpowder Colt Single Action Army revolver.
