Documented Scarce Factory Engraved Colt Etched Panel Model 1877 Thunderer Double Action Revolver with Ivory Grips and Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1888, this desirable Colt Model 1877 DA Thunderer revolver features documented factory floral scroll engraving with a punch dot background on the sides of the barrel, cylinder flats and frame. The barrel address is bordered by a zigzag line and dot design, which extends toward the muzzle. There is a zigzag line and dot design on the top strap, trigger guard shoulders, trigger guard and back strap. There is a shell design on the recoil shield and loading gate and a scallop and dot border below each. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address, the left side "COLT DA 41" in an etched panel and the left side of the frame is marked with the three line, three patent dates. The matching serial number appears on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. Blade front and frame notch rear sights, "bull's-eye" ejector head, blue finish with casehardened frame and fitted with smooth ivory grips. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length, blue finish, factory engraving with the grips as "Not Listed" and that it was shipped as 1 of 6 to Hartley & Graham in New York City on June 19, 1888. Either Hartley & Graham (or the factory) more than likely put the ivory grips on the revolver at that time.

Fine. The revolver retains 40% original blue finish concentrated in the protected areas, on the trigger guard and top of the back strap. The remaining surfaces have a smooth brown patina, while the frame has case colors in the protected areas with the balance having a smooth gray patina. The attractive grips are very fine with a moderate chip forming on the upper right panel, a small hairline age line present on the left panel at the escutcheon, an attractive caramel patina forming and an attractive grain. The action functions, but is out of time. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear.
