This is an exceptional example of a Hartley & Graham engraved 4 3/4 inch barrel .44-40 caliber Colt Single Action Frontier Six Shooter Single Action revolver that was manufactured in 1883. The Colt factory letter that accompanies this revolver describes it as caliber ".44/40" with 4 3/4-inch barrel and soft finish. The type of stocks are not specified. The letter states that this revolver was one of ten shipped from Colt to Hartley & Graham in New York, New York on March 5, 1883. The revolver has a nickel plated finish with casehardened hammer, niter blue screws, cylinder pin and trigger and two-piece pearl grips. The legend "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" is acid-etched in an oblong panel on the left side of the barrel. The sides of the barrel and frame, the loading gate cylinder and back strap are engraved with open Germanic style scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The engraving was probably executed by L.D. Nimschke or his shop. L.D. Nimschke engraved most of the Single Action revolvers that Colt shipped soft to Hartley and Graham. The right grip has a relief-carved steer head with very unusual diamond eyes set in gold mountings. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "COLT'S PT. F.A. Co./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The underside of the barrel is stamped with the caliber designation "44". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three date, three line patent marking with an engraved border. The assembly number "2505" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. "44CF" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard bow. "P", "N" and "H" are stamped between the chambers on the rear face of the cylinder. A block "H" Colt inspection mark is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The serial number "92101" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match.
BBL: 4 3/4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44-40 CF
Finish: nickel
Grips: mother of pearl
Serial Number: 92101
Condition:
Excellent. The revolver retains 90% of the original nickel-plated finish. The acid-etched "Frontier Six-Shooter" marking on the left side of the barrel retains nearly all of the delicate frosted finish. The hammer has 95% of the casehardened finish with soft case colors. The screws, trigger and cylinder pin retain most of the fire blue finish. The perfectly executed engraving is crisp and deep. The two-piece grips are both excellent and the relief-carved steers head is sharp. Wear is limited to several very minor scratches on the left grip. The left side of the barrel at the muzzle, the front edge of the ejector housing, the edges and face of the cylinder and the right side of the trigger guard near the frame all have finish loss from handling and some very fine pitting. There are light scratches and minor flaking on the bottom of the trigger guard and the butt. The action functions perfectly. This is an outstanding example of a Hartley & Graham engraved Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action with highly desirable 4 3/4 inch barrel and rare pearl relief carved steer head grip with diamond eyes.
