Documented Omaha, Nebraska Shipped Etched Panel Colt Model 1878 Frontier Six Shooter Double Action
This is a very fine example of a Colt Model 1878 D.A. revolver with factory letter that states it was shipped to Lee, Fried & Co. on February 18, 1885 (even though address is not given, Lee, Fried, & Co. was in Omaha, Nebraska). The factory letter lists the caliber as ".44/c", the barrel length as 7 1/2-inches and the finish as nickel. The revolver has a full-nickel-plated finish with niter blue screws, trigger and hammer top. The revolver has two-piece, black, hard rubber, 'bird's head' grips. The grips are checkered and embossed with the Rampant Colt trademark. The left side of the barrel is acid-etched: "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" in an oblong panel. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The caliber designation "44" is stamped on the underside of the barrel. "44CAL" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard bow. A Maltese Cross is stamped on the left side of the frame; the significance of this very unique period marking is unknown. The full serial number, "10/941" is stamped in two lines on the butt in front of the lanyard loop. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "220". The rear face of the cylinder is stamped with a "P" proofmark and a "S" Colt sub-inspection mark. This revolver is illustrated and described on page 267 of "COLT'S DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER MODEL of 1878" by Don Wilkerson.

Finish: nickel
Grips: hard rubber
Serial Number: 10941

Very fine. The retains approximately 70% of the original unpolished nickel-plated finish. Most of the finish wear is concentrated on the contact points of the grip straps and the right side of the frame. There are some scattered areas of flaking on the cylinder and on the right side of the frame. Most on the niter blue finish is present on the trigger and hammer top. The acid-etched "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" panel is crisp and distinct with very little wear. The barrel and frame markings are crisp. The grips are also in very fine condition with minimal wear. The action functions perfectly. This is a very fine, original, example of a true Old West Omaha, Nebraska shipped Colt 1878 "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" with outstanding acid-etched markings.
