Documented Omaha Nebraska Shipped Etched Panel Colt Model 1878 Frontier Six Shooter Double Action Re

Estimate: $4500 - 6500
This is a very nice example of a Colt Model 1878 Double Action revolver manufactured in 1885. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line address, the left side of the barrel is acid-etched "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" in an oblong panel, and the left upper front of the trigger guard is marked "44 CAL". A small "44" is stamped on the underside of the barrel ahead of the cylinder pin. The rear face of the cylinder is marked with a "P" and "S". The left side of the frame is period marked with the Maltese cross, significance unknown. The serial number is marked on the butt and the assembly number "220". Standard blade front and frame notch rear sights, nickel finish with niter blue trigger, screw heads and hammer (with polished sides), and fitted with checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the top and a lanyard loop on the butt. This revolver is illustrated and described on page 267 of "COLT'S DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER MODEL of 1878" by Don Wilkerson. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length, grips as "Not Listed", nickel finish and it was shipped as 1 of 5 to Lee, Fried & Co. address unavailable on February 18, 1885. Although address is not given, Lee, Fried & Co were wholesale hardware merchants in Omaha, Nebraska established in 1880.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44-40
Finish: nickel
Grips: hard rubber
Serial Number: 10941
Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 70% original nickel finish. Wear is limited to the front strap and front edges of the cylinder, with the balance of the finish loss due to flaking on the frame, cylinder and back strap. Most on the original bright niter blue finish remains on the trigger and hammer top. The grips are also very fine showing some minor handling wear and some slight bruising in the otherwise crisp checkering. The acid-etched "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" panel is crisp and distinct. The barrel and frame markings are crisp. There is a little play in the cylinder, otherwise the action is fine. A nice example of a true Old West Omaha, Nebraska shipped Colt Model 1878 revolver.
