Colt Single Action Cavalry Model Revolver manufactured in 1877 and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector John T. Cleveland (JTC). This revolver is one of 800 Cavalry Model single actions refurbished by Colt c. 1895 and issued to the New York Militia. These revolvers have matching serial numbers and 7 1/2-inch barrel. The barrels and cylinders were restamped with the full serial number by Colt during refurbishment. The left side of the grip is stamped with the New York rack number "A/250" and the butt has the lanyard swivel fitted by New York militia armorers to some of the Cavalry Model revolvers. This revolver's serial number is listed on page 49 of reference book " Colt Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers" by Kopec and Fenn. The revolver has the late oval ejector rod and cavalry hammer with elongated bordered knurling on the spur and cone-shaped firing pin. The revolver has a military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, loading gate a color casehardened finish. The hammer has the niter blue finish found on some revolvers refurbished in 1895. The one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Style II, Condensed Block Letter address "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." Small "J.T.C." sub-inspection stamps are visible on the underside of the barrel, the bottom of the frame and on the side of the cylinder. The grip was replaced during overhaul and the left heel is stamped with a small "R.A.C." sub-inspection mark. A "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. The left side of the frame is stamped with the Colt two-date/two-line patent marking followed by the "U.S." property mark. The loading gate is not stamped with the assembly number "6349". The full serial number "33060" is stamped on the frame, barrel, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. Two additional digits were added to the partial serial numbers originally stamped on the barrel and cylinder when the revolver was refurbished in 1895. All of the visible serial numbers match. Small "C" and "G" Colt inspection marks are stamped on the barrel below the ejector housing stud, "S" and "O"a restamped on the rear face of the cylinder and "C" is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The grip has no visible date or final/sub-inspection marks on the sides.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 33060
Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 80% of the correct original 1895 Colt refurbished blue and casehardened finish. The barrel and cylinder have most of the blue finish with holster wear on the muzzle, ejector housing and forward edges of the cylinder. The trigger guard, grip strap and back strap have moderate handling wear. The frame has most of the casehardened finish on the sides and protected areas with silvering on the recoil shield and top strap. The hammer has 50% of the distinctive niter blue. The grip is good overall with sharp rack numbers and scattered minor handling marks and scratches. All of the markings are clear. The action is crisp but the hammer will not hold at half-cock. Documented New York Militia Cavalry and Artillery single actions are scarce and desirable variations on the Colt Single Action Army revolver.
