This is one of the 3,000 Model 1899 Rifle/Carbines ordered by the Cuban government in 1904. The rifles and carbines are numbered together (1-3,000) and it is not known how many of each were ordered. The final disposition of the Cuban Lees is also unclear, but some were returned to Remington to be refurbished. This rifle has the boxed "RP" refurbish mark on the right side of the barrel ahead of the bayonet lug that has been observed on Remington refurbished Cuban contract Model 1899s. The top of the receiver ring has the serial number with the Cuban crest having been polished off during the factory refurbishing process. The right side of the cocking piece is marked "Cuban Model". The left receiver wall has the patent dates marking with the upper left receiver flat marked with the Ilion address. The top of the barrel is marked "30-40". Equipped with an inverted "V" front sight and a rear sight with a base graduated from 100-700 yards and a leaf graduated to 1,700 yards. "U" marked barrel bands with the front band having a stacking swivel. Smooth straight grip stock with matching handguard and flat buttplate. Included is a combination tool for the upper barrel band screw. This rifle is pictured and identified in Eugene Myszkowski's book THE REMINGTON-LEE RIFLE, page 62 as formerly being part of the Remington factory collection (the book and comes from the Remington museum records are included with this rifle).
