Documented First Year Production Four Digit Serial Number Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable 45-90 W.C. F. Caliber with Factory Letter and Accessories

This is an example of an original Winchester Model 1886 rifle manufactured in 1886, the first year of production in the desirable 45-90 cartridge with a full octagon barrel and full length magazine tube. The top barrel flat is marked in two lines: "----MANUFACTURED BY THE----/----WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A-----", with the breech end of the barrel marked "45-90 W.C.F.". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are marked on the lower tang behind the trigger with the serial number towards the rear. The barrel is equipped with the Winchester half nickel sporting front sight and a Winchester adjustable buckhorn type rear sight. Blue barrel and magazine, nickel receiver and lever and casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger and that it was received in and shipped out of the warehouse on November 11, 1886 to order number 12453. Comes with a leather cartridge belt with 38 loops for 45-90 cartridges, a lightly tooled royal marked leather scabbard and a vintage box of U.M.C. 45-90 cartridges for Winchester and Marlin.

Very good plus. The barrel and magazine tube have a smooth grayish brown patina. The receiver and lever show traces of the original case colors with a smooth silver gray patina on the balance. The hammer shows some strong muted original case colors with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is good with some shallow gouges on the forearm, and overall some scattered minor dings and dents. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is fine. The belt is good with some verdigris, some minor wear and flex cracking and tight stitching. The scabbard is about good with some moderate-heavy flex cracking, some scuffing and tight stitching. The ammunition box is full (20 count) and currently wrapped in plastic. The labels are mostly intact and some of the lettering is "washed" out.
