Documented Factory Engraved Colt Model 1877 Thunderer Double Action Revolver with Pearl Grips and Factory Letter

Colt Model 1877 D.A. revolver with Colt factory letter. The letter describes the revolver features as: "Caliber: .41/c, Barrel Length: 5", Finish: Nickel, Type of Stocks: Pearl", and "Factory Engraving: Yes". The letter further states that the revolver was shipped to the Simmons Hardware Company in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 22, 1882. The revolver has a nickel-plated finish with fire blue trigger, hammer top and screws. The factory engraving consists of Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The engraving is nearly identical to the engraving on Colt Model 1877 D.A. serial no. 6751 illustrated on page 452 of "THE COLT ENGRAVING BOOK, VOLUME ONE" by R.L Wilson. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in two lines surrounded by an engraved border. "COLT'S D.A. 41" is acid etched in an oblong panel on the left side of the barrel. The Colt 'Three-Line/Three-Date' patent markings are roll-stamped on the left side of the frame above a scroll-work flourish. The caliber designation "41 CAL" is stamped on the left rear of the trigger guard bow. The assembly number "556" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The serial number, "15341" is located on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and bird's head butt. The partial serial number, "341" is visible on the rear face of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Very fine. The revolver retains 80% plus of the original nickel-plated finish. There are several small spots of pitting and age spotting on the cylinder and the nickel-plating on the front edge of the frame, trigger, guard, grip straps and ejector housing has some scattered, minor, flaking. The barrel legend and frame markings are crisp but the delicate, acid-etched, model designation shows handling wear. The fire blue finish on the trigger is thin but nearly all of the niter blue is present on the hammer and the frame screws. The flawlessly executed Germanic scrollwork is deep and sharp. The grips are in excellent condition. The action is tight and functions well. This is a very good example of a scarce, factory engraved, Colt Model 1877 Thunderer D.A. revolver.
