Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1894
Deluxe, Special Order Winchester Model 1894 Takedown rifle manufactured c. 1911. This rifle is pictured on page 327 of THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING, 2nd Ed., by R.L. Wilson. The illustration is a rare factory photograph of this rifle which was apparently intended as a Winchester display rifle. The caption states that the rifle was engraved by Angelo J. Stokes. Wilson states that Stokes was employed at Winchester between 1887 and 1922 and joined the engraving department c. 1905. The engraving is equivalent to Winchester No. 8 engraving and features a game scene with Whitetail Deer with scrollwork borders that covers the entire right side of the receiver and detailed woodland scene with two deer and scrollwork borders on the left side of the receiver. The engraving covers the top of the receiver, the upper tang, bolt and the areas surrounding the lever on the underside of the receiver. The takedown collar, top of the barrel at the receiver and sides of the forearm cap are also decorated with engraved scrollwork. The rifle has a 26-inch round barrel with full length magazine. The barrel has a steel sporting style front sight with Lyman patent markings on the left side of the base and an adjustment screw on the right side. The rear sight is a special order "Winchester Express" sight with three leafs graduated at 50, 100 and 200 yards. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver are blue and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are fancy grain walnut with 'Style H' checkering and a satin oil finish. The stock has a special order shotgun buttplate with checkered black hard rubber buttplate. The buttplate is embossed with the round Winchester logo. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend, "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21 1894" on the left side of the barrel ahead of the rear sight. "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll stamped on the left side of the barrel behind the rear sight. The marking is followed by the caliber designation "-30 W.C.F." and the oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark. The Winchester proof mark is stamped on the top of the receiver surrounded by scrollwork. The serial number "566546" is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver.

Serial Number: 566546
Condition:
Very fine. The rifle has been factory refinished and retains at least 98% of the blue and casehardened finish. The engraving and factory markings are very crisp. The stock and forearm are excellent with sharp checkering and retain virtually all of the satin hand rubbed oil finish. This is an outstanding example of a Stokes embellished Winchester Model 1894 factory engraved display rifle.
