Soviet composer (1906–1975) whose fifteen symphonies occupy a place of central performance in the orchestral literature of the twentieth century. ALS in Russian, signed “D. Shostakovich,” one page, 8 x 5.75, May 28, 1970. Shostakovich sends birthday wishes to Pavel Alekseevich. In full (translated): “My warm greetings with your birthday. You are 50 years old. I wish you good health, success in your work, and happiness and good luck.” In fine condition, with a central vertical fold, one through a single letter of signature, and a few creases and wrinkles.
