Dixie Thompson's Fancy Mexican Sombrero. A very special Mexican sombrero worn by Dixie W. Thompson in parades. Overly ornate, as was his style. Gold thread forming leaves and vines, cones, huge showy bands and eagle decorations. The brim is trimmed in gold thread and sequins. Seen in many photographs of Dixie, including the one on the opposite page. 10" tall crown and a 5" brim. Circa 1880s.
Provenance: Dixie W. Thompson Estate; to M.H. de Young Museum, San Francisco, CA. Proceeds to benefit the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s acquisition funds.
