Display of artifacts presented to Nelly Shaw Harnar in the 1940s by her students. The display shows a nicely made pipe tomahawk with beaded decoration along with many chipped points and tools with her photograph in the left corner. This display was created to preserve the collection and the entire history is at attached to the rear. In summation; Nelly Shaw Harnar was born in 1905 and died in 1985. She was from the northern Paiute tribe born in Wadsworth, Nevada near Pyramid Lake. She attended school in the Carson City area of Nevada and went to college both in Kansas and Arizona where she obtained several degrees. Her master’s thesis was dedicated to her people named “Neh-muh” was the indigenous name of the Pyramid Lake people. She maintained formal education and her fluency in the Paiute language. She dedicated her life to teaching and counseling native people. She had a long career of public service and was named Nevada’s outstanding woman of the year 1975. She retired on the Pyramid Lake reservation and is remembered by her people and this display. Gale Kennedy Historical West Collection. Est.: $250-$500.
