Directoire-style Chairs Marked Chapuis,
France or Belgium, ca 1810-1860, by either Claude Chapuis (Paris) or Jean-Baptiste Chapuis (Brussels), branded Chapuis on lower slat. Four total, one arm and three side chairs. Of cherry, with baluster-shaped toprail above a pierced anthemion-shaped splat, the backs inlaid with ebony classical urns within an elongated diamond. Resting on turned legs. Seat height 16-16.25"; overall height 34".

Condition: These chairs, which are stamped CHAPUIS, were either executed by the Parisian ebeniste Claude Chapuis, (active 1797-1818), or by his Brussels counterpart Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864). Both used a stamp without their initials, which complicates attribution. Jean-Joseph was the most successful of the two.

No upholstery. Some splits and holes from earlier nails. Some old repairs and losses to inlay and some fading. Some blocks replaced. One splat possibly replaced.
