Bird-form Pendant
Diquís or Veraguas
A.D. 700 - 1500
Gold, Weight 135.6 grams
Height 4 ½ in. Width 3 ¼ in.

Several unusual features are present on this bird-form pendant. The wings arch high and stay close to the body, there is a slight tilt to the head, and the feet torque in relation to the body. The stalk eyes retain an early stylistic feature, while the outer band-and-boss wing enhancements are reminiscent of Jalaca style. The braided suspension loop is also unusual. Two folds across the tail, one with an incipient crack system at the lower edge, suggest that the pendant may have been ritually "killed" at some point in time. Condition is otherwise good.

The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.

Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
