Diquís, Veraguas, or Chiriquí Gold Bird Pendant
Bird-form Pendant
Diquís, Veraguas, Chiriquí
A.D. 700/800 - 1520
Gold, Weight 106.31 grams
Height 4 1/8 in. Width 4 1/16 in.

This flat-headed bird holds a double-headed serpent with braided body in its beak. It also grasps the serpent just behind the heads with its talons. Flattened, rather narrow flanges extend to either side from the top of the head. A chin strap which extends to encircle the eyes relates to examples in the Jalaca style. In addition to curls at the ear area, the flat head is finished on the top in an open work pattern. A crease with top crack lies across the proper right tail flange; this, a wing crease, and other linear reflective patterns suggest that the piece may have been "killed". Overall condition is good, with two small blue stains.

The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.

Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
