Width 4 7/16 in.

This richly elaborated pendant has not only double, crested bird heads, but two-tiered profile crocodile heads extending to the sides from behind the bird heads, their necks emanating sequences of curls. Great visual dynamism results. The braiding which surrounds the bosses along the lower wing edges supplements the energy of the composition. Suspension hooks were cast from the beak tips and ends of the talons, but there is no evidence that danglers were ever provided. The pendant was ritually "killed", fortunately not with great severity, but still enough to crack and bend the talons and blunt the curls at the upper beak tips and the beak-end suspension hooks. This process also flattened the back suspension loop. An ancient patch was integrated into the proper left tail end by hammering. The condition is good.

The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.

Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
