On May 24, 1934 five babies were born two months premature and not expected to live; but they survived and became famous. The girls themselves became a tourist attraction. By 1937, about 3,000 visitors were passing daily through the "Quintland" hospital compound where the sisters were being cared for, bringing in an estimated three million tourists between 1934 and 1943. Hollywood exploited their fame, and four movies were made about them in the 1930sóall with happy endings. But the real lives of the Dionne quintuplets were largely unhappy. On May 27, 1935, the provincial government of Ontario had taken the five sisters away from their parents, after their father, Oliva, signed a contract with promoters to exhibit the girls at the World's Fair in Chicago. Although Oliva cancelled the contract a day after he signed it, the authorities stepped in anyway to protect the babies, they said, from germs, potential kidnappers, and exploitation. This lot has five pieces of American history showing the impact of the Dionne Quintuplets: 1) 1937 hand fan from Schmidt's Elkhorn Brand ice cream from Elkhorn, Wisconsin; 8 x 14 inches. 2) 1953 Season's Greetings calendar from Turner, Stevens & Turner of Alhambra, California; 15 x 12 inches, some edge tears. 3) 1935 "The Story of the Dionne Quintuplets" authorized edition; 40 page booklet with many black and white photographs. 4) 1936 Dionne Quintuplets Picture Album; 10 x 9 inches, title page detached. 5) May 28, 1936 Stockton Record four page special color section celebrating their second birthday.
