A dinosaur coprolite is a fossilized piece of dinosaur feces, providing direct evidence of an animal's diet, behavior, and environment. The word "coprolite" comes from the Greek words kopros, meaning "dung," and lithos, meaning "stone". Coprolites are rare because feces normally decay quickly. The fossilization process requires a specific set of conditions to prevent decomposition such as immediate burial post excretion in a mineral rich, wet setting such as a riverbed or muddy swamp, that allows minerals such as calcium phosphate or silica to replace the original organic matter. Over time this mineralization turns the waste into rock. Scientists once claimed the process of fossilization took "millions of years" but despite an abundance of evidence that fossil formation is not time dependent as long as the necessary environmental factors occur. During catastrophic earth changes, the timeline for fossilization may occur much more rapidly. This piece of poop is polished on one side and measures approximately 7 x 3.5 x 1.5 inches. The swirling gray, amber, black, brown, milky blue, cream, orange and bright red colors are very pretty. A nice piece of display poo.
