Dinner at Eight (MGM, 1933). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Based on the Broadway hit by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, this comedy/drama presents an all-star cast in the best years of their careers. Socialite Millicent Jordan (Billie Burke) arranges a dinner party that will save the business of her sickly husband Oliver (Lionel Barrymore). Among the invited are a fading matinee idol (John Barrymore), who has squandered his fortune on liquor and is romantically involved with the Jordan daughter (Madge Evans); a stage actress (Marie Dressler), who has lost all of her money and has become a "professional guest;" the executive (Wallace Beery), from whom Jordan's business needs saving; and his wife (Jean Harlow), who is cheating on him with a doctor (Edmund Lowe). Like any farce, all plans oft go awry, complete with suicides, betrayals, terminal illness, compromises and the ever-feared problems with the help. Dinner, though, is served precisely at eight. This card needs little explanation: centered on Harlow, no collector's eye can miss the beauty of the image and the value of its rarity, particularly in a condition this close to perfect. Near Mint+.
