Highly regarded and influential Mexican artist (1886–1957) who earned international acclaim—and stirred controversy—for his powerful, politically charged murals. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, February 3, 1947. Letter to his agent Nettie King in New York City, who had made a proposal to the artist that he design Christmas cards for Harry Abrams. In part: "I am ready to wait for the decision of the publisher…The Christmas cards interest me, specially on account of being in the good company of painters such as you mention, but the only trouble is to have to do the sketches without knowing the results…The most difficult part of it is to imagine and do the composition for the painting. The actual price for my sketches are around the amount you announce as the possible advance, which make it difficult to risk the work without being sure of the profit obtained by it. This is why being interested in your proposition…” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, staple to top , and a uniform shade of mild toning. Accompanied by carbon copies of three letters King wrote to the artist in January, March, and September 1947 discussing in detail various aspects of the Christmas card project, including possible subjects, sizes, prices Abrams is willing to pay for Rivera's original artwork, as well as commission percentages and other business matters, providing an extraordinary view of the artist as a businessman.
